AlUla Saudi Arabia

AlUla is a city in the Medina Region, located in the north-western part of Saudi Arabia. Historically, it was situated on the incense route. The city falls under the jurisdiction of the 'Ula Governorate, one of seven in the Medina Region, and spans an area of 29,261 square kilometers (11,298 square miles). AlUla is 110 kilometers (68 miles) southwest of Tayma and 300 kilometers (190 miles) north of Medina. The city itself covers an area of 2,391 square kilometers (923 square miles) and has a population of 5,426. AlUla was once the capital of the ancient Lihyanites (Dedanites). The governorate is home to the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Saudi Arabia, known as Hegra (also referred to as Al-Hijr, or Mada'in Saleh / Mada'in Salih), which is 22 kilometers (14 miles) north of the city. Hegra (Mada'in Salih) was constructed over 2,000 years ago by the Nabataeans. AlUla, the ancient fortified city, is filled with mud-brick and stone houses.
